President to unveil new Cabinet after August 3 - Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe

30 July, 2022

Justice Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said that the decision to form a multi-party Interim Government is entirely up to the leaders of political parties in Parliament.

Rajapakshe told the Sunday Observer yesterday that President Ranil Wickremesinghe had asked the party leaders to reach an agreement and notify him of their decision.

“They’ve been given some time to think. However, there will be a time limit,” he said.

When asked how long it would take, Rajapakshe responded, “The President would not take long.”

When he reconvenes Parliament on August 3, he will most likely outline the steps he hopes to take in this regard based on the input from party leaders.

If political leaders and parties are unwilling to participate in the formation of an All-Party Interim Government, the President will appoint his new Cabinet.

“Political dithering on this issue will not help any transition,” he said, adding that “As a result, President Wickremesinghe will form a new Cabinet of the Government.”
