Kandy SC keep faith in vibrant backstage team

The 148th Annual General Meeting of the Kandy Sports Club was held on August 13, 2022 at the club house at Nittawela where former Dharmaraja College and Kandy SC player Mahesh Weerasinge was elected president for the fifth time.

Sujeewa Liyanage a product of St. Paul’s College (presently known as Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College) and Trintiy College was elected secretary with Upali Silva a product of Vidyartha College as the treasurer.

For the 22nd time the former Antonian, CH & FC, Kandy SC and Sri Lanka player Lasantha Wijesuriya who led the Nittawela club to win the triple in 1997 will function as senior vice president and rugby chairman.

He has the know-how to drive in values, encourage, respect and provide responsibility and integrity among the players with discipline the basic requirement.

Damith Dissanayake a top class hooker, who was in the national squad in 2016 and 17 is the new captain having learnt his junior rugby at Sarasavi Uyana MV and St. Sylvester’s College and later joined Trinity College to play in the senior team from 2008 to 2010.

Since 2011 he has been with Kandy SC.

At the AGM former Kingswood, Kandy SC and Sri Lanka player Roshan Weeraratne who is expected to migrate to Ireland was felicitated with a trophy and was presented a cash award by the club president Mahesh Weerasinghe and Ranjith Page of Cargills the long time sponsor of the club.

Weeraratne led Kandy SC to win the League and Clifford Cup.

Kandy Sports Club has done very well in rugby from the early1990s thanks to the efforts of Malik Samarawickrema and the late president Dr. Sarath Kapuwatte.

In the last tournament Kandy Sports Club were champions winning the league 22 times in the last 28 years from1994 to 2022, which is the most wins by any club since the expanded competition commenced in 1950.

Due to the support of Malik Samarawickrema the club is also blessed with an Ultra Modernized Gymnasium with all equipments while the generosity of the former Singer Sri Lanka Chairman Hemaka Amarasuriya cannot be forgotten.
