Electric three-wheelers and buses soon

28 August, 2022

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) will extend its support to convert three-wheelers to run on electricity and to introduce electric buses in Sri Lanka to reduce the impact of the fuel crisis and the harmful effects of fossil fuel on the environment.

A preliminary discussion was held between the Minister of Transport and Highways, Dr. Bandula Gunawardena and representatives of UNDP at the Transport Ministry on Monday, August 22. There are over a million three-wheelers in Sri Lanka. The fuel problem can be resolved and also passengers can travel at an affordable price in electric three-wheelers,

It is expected to convert 300 three-wheelers this year under the e-Mobility program implemented as a pilot project by the UNDP.. The UNDP has allocated US$ 3 million for the project. Attention was also paid to launch an electric bus service in Colombo.

Minister Gunawardena said that a Cabinet paper has been presented to bring all institutions related to passenger transportation under the National Transport Commission (NTC).

Through that, the NTC will also receive the power to amend the Act, determine the fees and to impose fines. In future, the registration of three-wheelers that are converted to run on electric power will also be started, the Minister added.
