Kerosene subsidy for low income families

4 September, 2022

A subsidy scheme will be introduced to provide direct financial assistance for fisher families and estate sector low income families who largely depend on kerosene to meet their day-to-today needs.

Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekara said that the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) has been incurring huge losses continuously over the past several decades due to the subsidies for kerosene.

The price of a litre of kerosene was earlier Rs. 87 and it was increased from August 21.

The new price of a litre of kerosene is Rs. 340, an increase of Rs. 253. The Government should have increased the price of kerosene several years ago, Minister Wijesekara added.
