Big boost for junior rugby in Kandy

Today Sunday it is going to be a good day for young rugby players as the Antonian Rugby Board has organized an under-12 mini rugby carnival for schools at the Nittawela ground with kick-off at 8.30 am.

This is the first time such a tournament is being held that organizers say is a massive boost for the promotion of the sport.

According to Gayan Abeykoon, head of the event organizing committee, the tournament will strictly follow the rules and regulations of junior rugby, administrated by the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLRFA).

Every school which is participating has registered two teams and the teams will be in two groups (A and B) and the champions will be selected under four segments, Cup, Plate, Shield and Bowl and participants will be presented with certificates. Duration of play will be seven minutes per half with a one minute break.

The schools in action will be St Anthony’s College, Trinity College, Vidyartha College, Dharmaraja College, St Sylvester’s College, Wariyapola, Sri Sumangala College, DS Senanayake College, Nugawela Central, Sarasavi Uyana Maha Vidyalaya, Chandananda College, Rahula College, Madeena College, Nawalapitiya Central College, Rangiri Dambulu Maha Vidyalaya, Katugastota Zahira College and St Aloysius College Galle.

The chief guest will be the newly elected Sri Lanka Rugby committee member Lasantha Wijesuriya who is also chairman of Kandy SC while the guests of honour will be Rev Fr. Henry Bernard Wijerathne and Chamila Bandara CEO Antonian Rugby Board among others.
