4 September, 2022

Foreign golfers including players from India and Pakistan have confirmed to participate at the 132nd Sri Lanka Amateur Golf Championship that will be held from September 5 to 10 at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) course.

The Sri Lanka Ladies Amateur Open Golf Championship will be run concurrently on these days.

Today (4) has been reserved for the practice round.

The Sri Lanka Amateur Golf Championship was initiated in 1891 and is the second oldest amateur golf championship in the world, after the British Amateur Golf Championship.

The first championship of Ceylon was played at Nuwara Eliya in March 1891 and was won by JW Govan of the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club (NEGC).

The three De Saram brothers Beauchamp, Fred and E.R. became the first Ceylonese to play in the championship in 1912.

Then in 1923 Timothy de Silva became the first Ceylonese to win the championship.

Legendary Pin Fernando made his mark among the British majority amateur golfers after the second world war. He emerged the champion on a record eleven occasions in a row.

Then emerged K. Nandasena Perera on the scene in 1983 and captured the renamed Sri Lanka Amateur Golf Championship consecutively for three years from 1988 to 1990.

“This year the Championship is expected to be a nail-biting tournament with top golfers vying for the Trophy. Roshan Ranasinghe, the Minister of Sports will grace the occasion as Chief Guest and will present the major awards on September 10,” said Michael Perera Magala president of Sri Lanka Golf.
