Counselling programs for students in Govt schools

The Education Ministry will expand its counselling programs among students in Government schools countrywide due to the upward trend of youth committing suicide.

This is the sequel to the three recent suicide cases at the Peradeniya University, Kurunegala, Senior Director of Education W.M. Balasooriya told a meeting of school heads in Kurunegala on Friday.

He said about 2,590 counselling programs will be held in schools countrywide during the next two months and 800 counsellors of the clergy and laity would be deployed for the purpose.

He said, “About 1,828 people have been reported to have committed suicide during the past three years due to family disputes, illicit love affairs, lack of parental love and protection, frustration and physical harassment by adults.
