Drugs seized on the high seas

The Navy has taken in for questioning smugglers of heroin (917.44 kg), crystal methamphetamine (Ice) (18.6 kg), Kerala cannabis (4865.5 kg) and local cannabis (24.51 kg) in Sri Lankan waters this year.

The special operation conducted by the Navy in coordination with the Sri Lanka Coast Guard, State Intelligence Service (SIS) and Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) on the high seas led to the seizure, Navy spokesman Capt. Indika De Silva told the Sunday Observer.

De Silva said the Navy and Coast Guard are engaged in operations covering the island and international waters based on information received from the SIS.

The street value of the illegal drugs seized so far this year is estimated to be over Rs. 16.45 billion.

Investigations are being conducted by the Navy and Police Narcotics Bureau.
