President’s Sports Awards to be revived after four years

25 September, 2022

The much looked forward to President’s Sports Awards ceremony that was not held for the past four years is likely to be held this year.

The Awards ceremony is conducted by the Ministry of Sports and the President’s Secretariat and was not held since 2018.

The winners were however picked for the 2019 event that had to be put off due to the outbreak of the Covid pandemic.

Former pre-Test cricket captain Michael Tissera was listed for the Lifetime Award in 2019.

The Awards ceremony also lost one of its main organizers and livewire in former Chairman of the Awards Committee Saman Amarasinghe who passed away and there was no one to continue his endeavours.

Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva, the Director of the Development Department at the Sports Ministry said that the awards ceremony was not held for the past four years due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic but will be held this year on a date yet to be decided.

“There will be a lot of winners this year but the cost of conducting the event will be kept to a minimum,” said Dr. De Silva. (TBR)
