Motor vehicle registrations drop

Sri Lanka’s motor vehicle registrations have dropped this year, recording a low of 15,184 units up to August, down from 33,850 units in 2021.

One thousand nine hundred and seventy seven vehicles were registered in August this year, according to the Department of Motor Traffic statistics. It last registered 2,000 units in December last year.

There was a time when thousands of three wheelers were registered per day, but only 18 three-wheelers were registered between January 2022 and August 2022. There were no three-wheeler registrations in July and August this year.

Registrations for motorcycles increased to 1,134 units in August 2022, up from 395 units in January 2022 as some brands and models of motorcycles are now being manufactured in Sri Lanka for the local market due to the import ban.

Hand tractors recorded 125 units in January 2022, which increased to 174 units in August 2022. Large tractors, which recorded 386 units in January 2022, dropped to 106 units in August. Only 14 passenger buses were registered in August
