Katukurunda races in December

Katukurunda Speed 2022 organised by the Sri Lanka Automobile Association is scheduled to be held on December 4.

This year the organizers have decided to run only car events on the Rotherham circuit and these details were disclosed to the media at a press briefing held at the Olympic House Auditorium on Wednesday.

The events to be worked off on this day are SLN Cars up to 1300cc, SLE Cars up to 1000cc one make Nissan March, SLH Cars up to 1600ccc one make (race 1), SLA Mini 7, SLN Cars up to 1500cc Ford Laser Ford Laser/Mazda323, SLGT Cars up to 3500cc (race 1), SLH Cars up to 2000cc one make Subaru Legacy, SLE Cars up to 1300cc Ford Laser Ford Laser/Mazda323, SLA Cars up to 1050cc, SLH Cars up to 1600ccone make (race 2), Formula McLarens 1300cc, SLGT Cars up to 3500cc (race 2).

Though ten categories are highlighted there will be twelve races to be run as SLH Cars 1600cc and SLGT 3500 cars will take place. These two major events are considered the fastest events on this day.

President of the SLAS Ashhar Hameem addressing the Media said that over the last three years drivers and riders were completely out of the sport due to unexpected issues that prevailed in the country.

He further added that SLAS hopes to donate money towards the Cancer Foundation under the name ‘Indira Cancer Trust’ which was founded by Dr. Lanka Jayasuriya Dissanayake and former Sri Lanka cricketer Roshan Mahanama.

“Though I was out of the country most of the country when the idea was brought to me I willingly decided to be a member of the Trust and decided to support this most worthy cause.

“I have spent more than 60 percent of my time working towards promoting the Trust and collecting sufficient funds to implement the project and we serve all who need our services, especially the children.

“Our Trust will have a special unit comprising of 32 beds for childhood cancer patients,” said Mahanama.
