Air Force and Police make positive starts at Open netball

Air Force and Police registered victories in the A division league encounters at the All Island Open Netball tournament conducted by the Western Province Netball Association that began at the Air Force ground in Slave Island yesterday.

Air Force beat Army by 28 points to 24 while Police beat Sri Jayewardenepura Campus by 28 points to 15 in the league stage. Only four teams were in action in the A division for women. They were Army, Air Force, Police and Sri Jayewardenepura Campus who will play once each.

Rain brought an early end to the day’s proceedings with many school teams participating in the under-15, 17 and 19 categories.

There were ten teams in the men’s A division event and they were divided into two groups.

Teams in group A are; Police, United SC Kurana, Goal Getters SC, Stanley Janze and SLTB.

In Group B are; Netfire SC Colombo, Sunshine boys, Relax SC Ratnapura, LFSC Ratnapura and Torrington SC Colombo. There were ten teams in the women’s veterans’ event. They are Speedbirds SC, Police, Bomriya SC, Angels SC and Kurunegala SC in group A.

Groups B consists of Sharks SC, Goal Getters SC, Familians SC Kalutara, Inland Revenue SC and Sri Lanka Ports Authority SC.

The ground was a hive of activity with about six courts laid out to conduct the fixtures at all times. (TBR)
