Govt to recruit 26,000 teachers by March

25 December, 2022

Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha said the Government will recruit 26,000 teachers in March next year as there is a dearth of teachers in Government schools countrywide.

The new teachers will be incorporated into the Sri Lanka Teachers’ Service from among Development Assistant Officers through a competitive examination conducted by the Examinations Department in January 2023, the Minister told the Sunday Observer.

Nearly 6,000 trainee teachers who have passed out from the National Colleges of Education after completing their three-year teacher training courses, will also be recruited to schools in remote areas, he said.

Selected candidates will be given appointment letters as teachers from March 24, 2023.

The Minister said all school heads will be trained next year for the smooth functioning of schools under a UNICEF program and Rs. 150 million will be allocated for training purposes of school teachers and school heads.

“The sole aim of the Government is to usher in a new era for the country with a new vision during the next few years with dedicated administrative officers,” he said.

The Minister said more graduates will be recruited to the School Teachers’ Service by the end of next year as nearly 3,500 school teachers and school heads will retire early next year.
