Three independent MPs mull rejoining Government

25 December, 2022

Three parliamentarians, W.D.J. Seneviratne, Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle and Piyankara Jayaratne are ready to cross over to the Government from the Opposition, where they have been sitting as an independent breakaway group in Parliament, from the ruling party, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), the Sunday Observer learns.

The group’s leader is MP Anura Priyadharshana Yapa.

The Sunday Observer asked MP W.D.J. Seneviratne whether he and his independent group of MPs would leave the independent breakaway group and rejoin the Government.

Seneviratne said, “We are seriously considering joining the Government. But, we will decide on it depending on how the Government takes the nation forward.”

Asked as to why they had considered rejoining the Government, Seneviratne said, “The present Government led by President Ranil Wickremesinghe is doing some good work.”

“The people once faced severe difficulties. They went through hardships. People’s properties were in danger of being destroyed and set on fire because law and order took a downward trend. People were forced to wait in queues most of the time. However, these queues are no longer visible.”

“We discussed our concerns such as the soaring cost-of-living with the President and that steps need to be taken to bring it down,” he said.

Seneviratne said they would rejoin the Government depending on how the Government would tackle the cost-of-living problem.

“We want to avoid seeing the Government topple at this juncture. We discussed it with the Government. We declined to vote against the Government at the Budget vote because of this reason,” he added.

“I strongly feel that we cannot afford to go for an election now. The Government cannot fund an election. No party will get a majority to form a strong Government in the present circumstances,” he said.

“Holding an election at this juncture could lead to an unprecedented destabilisation of the country. It will hit our economy, in the worst possible way. This is not the time to change Governments,” he added.
