Police have launched investigations following the theft of over Rs. 10. 6 million from three ATM machines at Hikkaduwa, Galle and Baddegama in the Southern Province.
Police Media spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa yesterday told the media that the suspects had carried out the robberies on Friday by breaking into the automated teller machines and hacking into their operation systems by way of using computer hacking devices.
They had used malware to manipulate the bank software to steal the money from the ATMs, according to SSP Thalduwa.
The suspects are foreign nationals, he said. They had got away after stealing Rs. 4.6 million from an ATM vendor at Hikkaduwa, Rs. 275 000 from an ATM at Karapitiya and Rs. 5.6 million from an ATM at Baddegama, Galle.
