Havelocks doomed

22 January, 2023

Fancied Havelocks, who cried foul that they were deprived of the inter club league rugby title last year after their match against Kandy SC was not played as the tournament was halted prematurely, went down to Police SC 19-21 on their home ground at Havelock Park yesterday.

Before the match not many gave Police SC a dog’s chance to win and more of Havelocks followers kept away from the contest assuming a cake-walk for the Park Club.

But Police SC proved all the pundits wrong as they led 14-12 at half time playing as the better team for most part of the game while taking their opponents by complete surprise.

For Havelocks it was a day they will want to forget as their chances of winning the eight-team league title have been hit for a six with two defeats while their closest rival Kandy SC remain unbeaten from six matches.

Havelocks went into the match as the second ranked team in the points table while Police SC were at the bottom of the table with four defeats and just one win compared to four wins recorded by the Park Club.

But Havelocks played a very unprofessional game unbecoming of a team aiming to win the title and it made Police revel in the mess the home team put themselves in.

Police SC capitalized on the lapses of Havelocks and scored three tries converting all three while their opponents scored the same number of tries and failed to convert one.

The try scorers for Police were Yohan Peiris, Shanaka Harischandra and Nisal Samadhi while the conversions were made by Peiris.

For Havelocks the try scorers were Randitha Warnapura, Chanaka Chandimal and Vimukthi Rahula while Sandesh Jayawickrema converted two tries.
