Two PUCSL members resign

4 February, 2023

Two members of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) yesterday tendered their resignations to President Ranil Wickremesinghe who is also the Minister Finance.

Veteran media personality Mohan Samaranayake in his resignation letter to the President has outlined key reasons that compelled him to make the decision.

Samaranayake in his letter alleged that the PUCSL Chairman continues to make decisions and statements purported to be that of the Commission without the concurrence of the rest of the members.

He said that this situation has rendered the other members of the Commission redundant. “I have been humiliated and painted villain before the society,” he said.

Samaranayake added that the work environment in the PUUSL has become highly unprofessional, unpleasant and intolerable.

He said that this situation has degenerated to such an extent when a group of thugs was organized and allowed inside the Commission.

“The situation has degenerated to such an extent that on January 20, 2023 when a special meeting of the Commission was held, a group of thugs was organised and allowed inside the Commission premises who indirectly threatened me with physical assault and destruction of property,” Samaranayake said in his letter.

He further said that this act of hooliganism was justified by insinuation by PUUSL Chairman, at the National Council Meeting held in Parliament on January 24, 2023 with the participation of Commission members.

“His justification of threats against me indicates that I run the risk of being threatened and even assaulted in future”, he said.

He also added that the ordinary people were left in quandary as the Government authorities concerned, failed to counter legal and other arguments against the proposed electricity tariff hike with irrefutable facts.

Deputy chairman of the Commission Udeni Wickremasinghe , an engineer by profession also resigned from the office citing personal reasons.
