Apply for NICs of students sitting GCE (O/L) exam early

5 February, 2023

The Department of Registration of Persons has instructed all school heads that they should apply for National Identity Cards (NICs) as early as possible for school candidates sitting the GCE(O/L) examination - 2022.

The Examinations Department has already begun accepting applications and those sitting the examination should apply between February 1 and 28.

Around 400,000 candidates apply for NICs annually for the examination and only 10 percent of the applicants have applied so far for the NICs through the school heads.

The Department of Examinations will ask candidates to produce only their NICs to avoid malpractices at the examination centres. The GCE (O/L) examination is due to be held in May this year. Nearly 20,000 school teachers and school heads would be deployed for examination duties.

Four hundred and fifty nine candidates were not issued their results since they were found copying and exchanging answers with other candidates during the past two years.

Nearly 56 teams of special investigators would be deployed to make sudden visits to the examination centres to ensure smooth functioning during the examination in May, the circular to school heads stated.
