Sharp increase in dengue cases

There has been a sharp increase in the number of dengue cases reported within the month of January this year, according to the Epidemiology Unit.

According to the statistics received from the National Dengue Control Unit, 6,155 suspected dengue cases were reported to the Epidemiology Unit from all over the island from January up to now.

The highest number of dengue cases was reported from the Western Province. That is approximately 38.6 percent. The number of patients reported from the districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kandy, and Puttalam were 871, 846, 224, 190, and 533. It is also reported that 255 patients had been identified in the Jaffna district as well within the first two weeks of January this year. The Epidemiology Unit reported 25,067 dengue cases in Sri Lanka in 2021, 31,162 cases in 2020 and 105,049 cases in 2019. It is the responsibility of the public to try to the maximum extent possible to stem the spread of this disease which could be fatal if proper health guidelines are not followed.
