13 February, 2023

There is no strong evidence to suggest that Sri Lanka is vulnerable to major earthquakes in the future, Peradeniya University’s Senior Professor in Geology Athula Senaratne said.

He said that the public need not panic over the tremors experienced recently in Sri Lanka.

“The earthquakes in the last few decades have been mapped in Sri Lanka. We can get a rough idea of their patterns by studying them. In recent years, there had been tremors every year, and those were frequently reported in the months of January, February, March and December.Tremors had occurred in areas such as Buttala, Moneragala, Wellawaya and Rajagala in Ampara.
