It is regrettable that MP C. V. Wigneswaren criticizes the Maha Sangha without knowing the sacrifices made by the Maha Sangha over the years to protect the country, nation and religion, Anunayake of Malwathu Chapter Most.Ven. Dimbulkumbure Wimaladhamma Thera said.
The Thera also said that Wigneswaran, who is a judge, a Party leader and an MP, should study the role played by Maha Sangha from the past until now before issuing statements like this. While noting that the MP has stated that it is appropriate for Buddhist monks to stay in the temple and only engage in religious activities without expressing views on politics, similar to what leaders of the religion he believes do, the Thera said one should not forget the patriotic roles played by leading Buddhist monks like Wariyapola Sumangala Thera who sacrificed his life to protect the country’s integrity.
He said that the MP who states that information in the ancient scriptures such as Mahavamsa, Chulavamsa, Thupavamsa are not important and the history should be re-written does not know the correct facts and the Maha Sangha is saddened when an elderly politician speaks in this way.
