Sri Lankan girls outsmart Kyrgyzstan

Sri Lanka’s girls tennis team did well to emerge winners by beating Kyrgyzstan 2-1 in the final and qualified to play in the next round of the Billie Jean King tennis tournament at the SLTA courts at Sir Marcus Fernando Mawatha yesterday.

Dinara de Silva played well in her singles match and the doubles match with partner Inuki Jayaweera to win in straight sets.

The first singles match of the tie saw Sri Lanka’s Ruvi Lewkebandara go down to Kamila Aripova in straight sets. Then Dinara de Silva played with determination to beat Safina Khabibrakhmanova in straight sets with the opponents retiring when 3-nil down.

Singles:

Ruvi Lewkebandara lost to Kamila Aripova 2-6, 0-6’
Dinara de Silva beat Safina Khabibrakhmanova 6-2, 3-0 (rtd)

Doubles:

Dinara de Silva and Inuki Jayaweera beat Kamila Aripova and Erika Ismailova 6-3, 6-4.
In the Davis Cup Junior boys event Sri Lanka finished third when they beat Qatar 3-nil yesterday.

In the two singles matches Methvan Wijemanne and Sandas Usgodaarachchi beat their opponents. Wijemanne was made to labour for his victory that went up to a tie breaker.

In the doubles match Dhanushka Dias and Sandas Usgodaarachchi beat their opponents in straight sets.

Singles:

Sandas Usgodaarachchi beat Hassan Waly 6-1, 6-3.
Methvan Wijemanne beat Mashari Naif 6-3, 0-6, 10-8.

Doubles:

Dhanushka Dias and Sandas Usgodaarachchi beat Ghanim Al-Suliti and Hassan Waly 5-3, 5-3.
