Imported eggs only for food industry - State Minister

Finance State Minister Dr. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said imported eggs will be supplied to the manufacturing industries in bulk, and as a result, there will be no impact on the local egg producers. He said that the reason for importing eggs was the shortage of eggs in the country.

The minister was replying to a question posed by as journalist during a sports programme held in Ruwanwella, where the minister was the chief guest.

The State Minister said that although the egg import tax has been reduced as the shortage of eggs is an obstacle to the running of the food industry, the reduction is applicable only to the State Trading Corporation.

He mentioned that eggs imported from India can be given to food manufacturers at a price of 30 rupees. The Cabinet recently decided to import eggs in order to control the price of eggs in this country and accordingly the government took steps to import two million eggs from India.
