LG bodies brought under Municipal Commissioners, PS Secretaries

The power of 340 out of the 341 Local Government institutions whose term of office ended at midnight yesterday (19) is vested with Municipal Commissioners and Pradeshiya Sabha Secretaries. Provincial Councils and Local Government State Minister Janaka Wakkumbura said yesterday that the power of 29 Municipal Councils was vested with the Municipal Commissioners and the power of 36 Urban Councils and 275 Pradeshiya Sabhas to the Secretaries of those Councils from midnight.

The state minister also added that the government has officially informed the heads of all Local Government institutions whose term of office has ended to hand over all government properties.

Minister in charge of the subject, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, who summoned all the Governors,instructed them to run the respective Local Government bodies, with the help of Municipal Commissioners and Secretaries of Local Government bodies after March 20. However, the term of office of the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha which was established later, will continue.

Although the Local Government has been operating for a period of four years from March 29, 2018, their term of office was extended by one year due to the situation existed in the country.

The Local government election should have been held before yesterday and new members should have been elected under Local Government Law. But due to the fact that the polling could not be held before that date, the power of the local government bodies ended yesterday midnight.

State Minister Janaka Wakkumbura said that he hopes to get maximum service from them as well.
