Grade Five Schol cut-off marks under fire

Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena yesterday said that he will make a request to the Speaker as the former Education Minister to appoint a Parliamentary Select Committee to investigate all aspects of the Grade 5 scholarship examination in depth as a few Education Ministry officials are making these decisions at their own will.

He said that the parents and the children do not have proper understanding on how the Passing mark , scholarship mark and cut off mark of the Grade 5 scholarship examination is determined by the Education Ministry

Minister Dr.Bandula Gunawardena said that he had brought to the notice of relevant Education Ministers and in some instances to the Criminal Investigation Department about the few officers of the Education Ministry who are taking decisions with regard to the pass mark, Scholarship mark and Cut off mark of the Grade 5 scholarship examination without following a transparent process.

“A group of Education Ministry officials are taking these decisions arbitrarily and without any rational basis at their own will,” he said.

The former Education Minister said that he will make a request to the Speaker to appoint a parliamentary select committee to investigate all aspects of the Grade 5 scholarship in depth including calling for evidence from the officials and other stakeholders concerned.

He said that the will make a formal request to speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena at the next parliament session.
