Athula Senaratne, a former Senior Professor in the Department of Geology of the University of Peradeniya said that there are large cracks in the deep seabed west of Colombo and it should be investigated whether there is a connection between these cracks and the earth tremors experienced in the Western Province.

He also said that without taking matters lightly about the recent earth tremor in the Beruwala area, it is important to carry out a formal investigation and find out the main cause of the earth tremors.

He also stated officials will be able to identify the main causes of earth tremors by installing more seismometers and analyzing the data obtained through them. The Professor said that since 1615, earth tremors have been recorded in the region around Colombo, but the cause of them has not yet been identified.

He said that earth tremors may occur to the west of Colombo in the future and if a strong earthquake occurs in the vicinity of Colombo where there is a high population density, the damage caused by it may be huge and therefore it is extremely important to pay special attention in this regard.
