Large crowds thronged Nuwara-Eliya yesterday both due to the long holiday and the April festival.
The Nuwara-Eliya Police OIC H.A.Premalal said that there is an increase of foreign tourists this year for the April festival.
He said that more than 600 police officers have been deployed to protect the hotel premises where foreign tourists are staying and to patrol the roads. Additional officers have been assigned from the Nuwara Eliya Division and other divisions.
Two carnivals will be held at Lake Gregory and another at the Singsita Stadium.
The bicycle mountain races began yesterday and the motor vehicle races are slated to begin on Tuesday. Premalal further said that the Police expects an increase in domestic and foreign tourists with the beginning of next week.
