Sebastianite century makers highlight drawn match against Cambrians

Two century makers from St. Sebastian’s College, opener Sanesh Fernando (an unbeaten 114 in the first innings) and an unbeaten 101 in the second innings by right hand one-drop batsman Vimath Dinsara were the highlights of their 73rd Battle of the Golds cricket encounter against Prince of Wales College which ended in a draw at the De Soysa Stadium in Moratuwa yesterday.

In reply to the first innings score of 219/7 declared by St. Sebastian’s College, Prince of Wales, also called Cambrians, were bowled out for 208.

The captain of Prince of Wales Omesh Mendis 65 (younger brother of Kusal Mendis) together with opener Tharindu Amarasinghe 73, showed some resistance with the bat scoring half centuries.

Sebastianites’ skipper Sandesh Fernando had a sensational spell of spin bowling to bag 6 wickets for 67 runs off 28.1 overs on day two.

St. Sebastian’s began their second innings 21 runs ahead and got a good start once again putting on 33 runs for the first wicket at the end of the second session of the day.

After the tea break, St. Sebastian’s accelerated the run-scoring and were 207 for 2 when the umpires called off play on day two as both teams had to settle for a draw.

In the second innings right hand one-drop batsman Vimath Dinsara scored a brilliant unbeaten 101while left handed opening batsman Adesh Almeida supported Dinsara by scoring a superb 79 for St. Sebastian’s College.
