Sri Lanka make final preparations for netball World Cup

The Netball Federation has come up with suitable players as captain and vice captain of the Sri Lanka team as they prepare to take part in the World Cup to be held in Cape Town, South Africa from July 28 to August 6.

Sri Lanka, drawn in Group C are scheduled to compete against Jamaica on July 28, hosts South Africa on July 29 and Wales on July 30.

Gayanjali Amarawansa and Dulangi Wannithilake are the two names recommended and sent to the National Sports Selection Committee and the Ministry of Sports for their approval.

Being Asian champions, Sri Lanka and the runners-up Singapore are the teams from Asia that will be among the 16 countries in the fray. Amarawansa and Wannithilake were the captain and vice captain of the Sri Lanka team during the Asian championship as well.

Amarawansa has represented Sri Lanka in three Asian Championships (2016, 2018, 2022) and two World Cups (2015 and 2019).

Wannithilake has represented the country in two Asian Championships (2018, 2022) and one World Cup Netball Tournament (2019) and can also be called a rising star.

The final selection trial was held on April 9 at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

As Tharjini Sivalingam is in Australia, she did not participate in the trial and if she is not available to represent Sri Lanka she will be replaced by Imasha Perera.

The following squad has been submitted to the Ministry of Sports for approval.

Gayanjali Amarawansa, Gayani Dissanayake, Thisala Algama, Seminy Alvis, Chaturangi Jayasuriya, Malmi Hettiaarachchi, Dulangi Wannithilaka, Bhashini Yoshita, Rashmi Perera, Gayatri Kaushalya, Shanika Perera and Tharjini Sivalingam.
