Potential for cyclonic storms due to depression over Bay of Bengal

According to the Advisory issued by Meteorological Department, the deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into the cyclonic storm “Mocha” and lay centered near 11.2°N and 88.1°E at 05.30 a.m. of today (11th May). It is very likely to move north-northwestwards and gradually intensify into a severe cyclonic storm around mid-night of today the 11th May.

Thereafter, it is likely to recurve gradually, move north-northeastwards from 12th May morning and intensify further into a very severe cyclonic storm around 12 th May evening over central Bay of Bengal.

The system likely to weaken slightly from 14th May morning and cross southeast Bangladesh and north Myanmar coasts around forenoon of 14th May.

Due to this system, wind speeds will be (50-60) kmph and can increase up to 70-80 kmph in sea areas bounded by (03N - 20N) and (85E – 100E) during next 24 hours.

Heavy showers or thundershowers and very rough seas can also be expected in above sea areas.

Meteorological Department has advised to take the following steps:

• Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into the sea areas bounded by (03N - 20N) and between (85E – 100E) until further notice.

• Those who are out at aforementioned sea regions are advised to return to coasts or moved safer areas immediately.

• Naval and fishing communities are requested to be vigilant while engaging in fishing and naval activities in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota.

• Individuals who are traveling in the sea are requested to stay vigilant in general
