Boost for Sri Lanka-Japan ties

President Ranil Wickremesinghe held bilateral talks with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo on May 25. They discussed efforts to strengthen the close diplomatic, cultural, religious, tourism and trade links between the two island nations. President Wickremesinghe appreciated Japan’s assistance towards resolving the economic crisis and debt restructuring. He expressed regret over the unilateral suspension of the Colombo Light Rail Transit (LRT) project by the previous Government and expressed his desire to recommence the project. The President also held discussions with Japanese Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki, focusing mainly on debt restructuring and the IMF program. He also participated in an investment seminar.
