Cabinet Sub Committee on educational reforms

The Education Ministry has put on hold its plans for educational reforms this year since a Cabinet Sub Committee has been appointed for the purpose under President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Kurunegala district Senior Director of Education W.M. Balasooriya told a meeting of school heads yesterday that modules will be introduced instead of free text books for students of Government schools countrywide. As a pilot project, it was planned to implement this program in 108 schools this year and Cabinet approval has been obtained, he said.

Among the members of the newly appointed Cabinet Sub Committee are Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, Ministers Dr. Bandula Gunawardena, Dr. Susil Premajayantha, Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, Dr. Ramesh Pathirana, Ali Sabry, PC, Prasanna Ranatunga and Kanchana Wijesekara.

The Cabinet Sub-Committee has appointed a committee of intellectuals chaired by the Secretary to the Prime Minister Anura Dissanayake.

Balasooriya said that according to the recommendations of the committee of intellectuals, measures on educational reforms will be carried out. By 2048, Sri Lanka will be transformed into a developed country and educational reforms need to be launched to achieve the goals of President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The Education Ministry has declared school holidays from May 27 to June 11 for Government schools on account of the GCE (OL) examination 2022.
