“So, everyone blames me”

11 June, 2023

Alexandar d’Urberville; says:

Why didn’t you listen to me? You always took Tessy’s side, and that is okay with me. But you always had reasons for Angel Clare, who abandoned my Tessy. You made me the villain, by showing yourself as the omniscient observer, yet, thou were blind to see my side of the story.

I could not control myself, no; I did so, up to some extent, yet who thought that she would refuse and regret it; because her acceptance of working at my house itself says that she accepts my offer, even a small child could understand it, let alone her! If she could not, why didn’t her parents warn her? Why blame me? When I thought that she came for it, yes, she refused several times, but I thought it was because she was shy. And why only blame me, when Angel Clare, a parson’s son also have done it with another woman! Why only blame me?

I even asked her to inquire if she needs help: is it because she was my ‘coz’? no! because I love her! If she did so, she would not even meet that, Clare! And thou, Hardy, you ought to call that ‘true love’ when your so-called Mr. Clare left Mrs. Clare, the newly married bride! He even asked out from Izz Huett, yet, you did not say anything to it, whereupon, I never looked at another girl after I encountered her, yet, thou call me villain.

I made her my mistress, I could not see, she was waiting for him! Because I thought he’d never come, and she deserves much better. I gave her everything.

I even let her kill me, otherwise you really thought that I would be killed by a fork? Also, with her trembling hands. Because I knew Mr. Clare, that with your presence, she will not be mine. And finally, I won, as she also came to me. And they call you a true lover, Mr. Clare, when you dared to touch her sister’s hand, -Lizza Lu- even right before she breathed her last. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Hardy, you knew that Tess and Clare would never exist, so you put the blame on me. Ah! Yes, you ought to, otherwise blame who? The sun and the moon? Ah! I know, you can’t, you are too obsessed with nature, otherwise you could have blamed the nature, which supported Tess and Angel and which even supported me. Yet you could not!

So, everyone blames me!
