Tourist flying drone near Dalada Maligawa arrested

8 July, 2023

A tourist who flew a drone camera from the premises of the Kandy restaurant to the Sri Dalada Maligawa high security zone area was arrested by the officers of Dalada Maligawa Police Station yesterday (7) morning.

Police said that the foreign national has directed the drone camera to the Dalada Maligawa premises despite the fact that the Civil Aviation Authority or the Office of the Chief of Security Staff does not allow drone cameras to fly inside the premises of Sri Dalada Maligawa.

In the past, people who sent drone cameras to Dalada Maligawa premises without permission were arrested by the police on many occasions. It has been learned that even though Air Force personnel are deployed for the security of Sri Dalada Maligawa, they are not able to prevent drone cameras from flying over the Dalada Maligawa premises.

The radar system for monitoring drone cameras has been established at the Mirigama Air Force Base and investigations have revealed that if anyone directs a drone camera to the Dalada Maligawa premises, Sigiriya Air Force Base officials are required to come to disable it.

Due to this, there is a problematic situation for the security of Sri Dalada Maligawa and the security forces have indicated that a drone jammer should be installed to prevent drone cameras from flying above this high security zone area. It is also known that these devices are installed in the Dalada Maligawa premises only on special occasions.
