Enjoining orders against Silumina

9 July, 2023

The Colombo District Court has issued three Enjoining orders that prohibit the Silumina newspaper, its website www.silumina.lk, and all its associated social media accounts from publishing any content related to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and its officials.

The Enjoining orders were issued by Colombo District Judge Sandun Vithana after considering a complaint filed by the President and the Vice President of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) against a journalist from the Silumina newspaper and the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL).

The President and the Vice-President of SLC had filed this case with regard to a news item published in the Silumina newspaper and on its website, demanding damages amounting to Rs. one billion.

A journalist of that newspaper and the ANCL were named as defendants. On June 26, when the case was called, the Court considered the facts presented by the plaintiffs and decided to issue three Enjoining orders as requested by them.

As a result, the Court has temporarily restrained the Silumina and its social media accounts from publishing any content that could defame the Sri Lanka Cricket or its executives.

This restriction will remain in place until the hearing of the case is concluded.

Further submissions in this case should be made on or before July 10.
