Fifteen passengers injured as bus overturns in Demodara

At least 15 passengers were injured after a bus overturned in Demodara yesterday morning, police and hospital officials said.

According to the officials the privately- owned passenger coach was packed with some 25 passenger when the incident took place.

The driver and conductor were listed among the injured, according to the officials.

The injured passengers were rushed to the Provincial General Hospital in Badulla for medical attention.

The bus had been en route from Badulla to Colombo when it veered off the road and toppled over, they said.

It was only on July 9 that 11 persons were killed and another 40 injured when  a packed privately-owned passenger bus plunged into a deep open water body at Kaduruwela, Akkaraipattu shortly after dusk.

The incident took place on the Kotiliya Bridge.

There were 67 passengers inside the vehicle when the incident took place, police said.

The bus was travelling from Kaduruwela to Akkaraipattu.

Initial investigations have revealed that excess speed and irresponsible driving led to both incidents.
