The Kandy Esala Perahera, which commenced on August 21, will be held every night until August 30, Nikini Full Moon Poya Day, followed by the Day Perahera on August 31. The Kandula tusker of the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara received the privilege of conveying the Sacred Relics Casket for the first time at the Esala Perahera last week. Kandula was accompanied by Sri Dalada Maligawa’s own tuskers Sinha Raja and Miyan Raja. More than 75 other tuskers and elephants are participating in the Perahera. This year, the Perahera is parading more streets with more dancing troupes. A special train service will be operational until August 30 for the convenience of devotees to see the Perahera.
