Schools rugby coach Sanath Martis achieved a rare feat of winning the inter-school League title for the sixth time in his career.
He reached the milestone last month when St. Peter’s College won the 2023 inter school League title with him as their coach.
Previously Martis guided the Peterites to two League titles, after doing the same coaching Royal College.
Never wanting to go down without a fight, Martis also coached Isipathana to win the League title once in 1992.
He earlier coached the Peterites to win the League unbeaten in 2007 with Ranuka Jayasinghe as captain and did the same in 2010 with Keith Gurusinghe as skipper.
In 2015 Royal College coached by Martis and captained by Bhanuka Gamage won the League title which they did in 2017 as well with Ovin Askey as captain.
Speaking exclusively to the Sunday Observer Martis said: “I’m actually very happy to have achieved this feat, but I must tell you that nothing would have been possible for me if my family, my wife and two daughters did not support me right throughout my rugby coaching career thus far. So I’m always eternally grateful to all three of them,” said Martis.
He is credited with perfecting the rolling maul from which many tries were scored and matches won.
