Fernando
A famous sporting product of St. Benedict’s College Mervyn Fernando, passed away last week.
He hailed from a family of sporting brothers and represented the Benedictines in cricket and football and passed away at the age of 79.
Mervyn was the vice captain of a formidable team captained by Sunil Fernando in 1964 as they went through an unbeaten season to be crowned champions.
Mervyn was a reliable batsman who also bowled medium pace and went on to play club cricket for NCC, the Combined Universities and the Lanka Lions in Dubai.
He hailed from a family of four brothers with the elder of the set Lionel who captained the Bens in cricket and later played for Ceylon, Benildus and Damian.
Benildus was an athlete who also represented Sri Lanka while Damian also played football and cricket.
Mervyn’s funeral was held on Monday at the general cemetery in Negombo.
