Sujatha Vidyalaya is unparalleled among the well renowned schools in Sri Lanka. It has now emerged as a superb centre of learning for model education with a reputation spread far and wide, ranking among the most prestigious in the area. Sujatha Vidyalaya is in 50 years of service to the nation. Hence this piece of work “50 Years of Nation Building” which reflects the glittering progress of Sujatha Vidyalaya since its inception under the founder and how it blossomed into brilliance under the present Management.
The very word Sujatha inspires them towards a new era of hope and happiness regarding their future. Education is a lifelong pleasure and a guarantee for a successful future is well exhibited in this work. It was created for the intelligentsia, finally getting out with a brilliant academic achievement, later worthy of a rewarding career and refinement in life.
Sujathians should be grateful that they are offered the best of everything that one could ever dream of in addition to the excellent facilities with the best staff, the study programs, the curriculum on par with modern teaching methods. There is a strong tradition of quality in every aspect. It is a well known fact that it illuminated the lives of Sujathians so much so that it is a pride for them to say that “I am a Sujathian”. Sujatha Vidyalaya remains great, adding colour, becoming stronger day by day and year by year.
Having concluded the Golden Jubilee celebrations with much grandeur, Sujatha Vidyalaya is proudly serving Mother Lanka. From the main school now spreading to Gamsabawa Junction except for one or two houses it is Sujatha Vidyalaya all along with pre-school right at the corner leave aside the well established branches at Maharagama that part of Nugegoda is now adorned by Sujatha Vidyalaya. This is the original school founded on June 1, 1965 by the founder, architect and pioneer, Late Linton Kuruppu joined by Mrs. Clara Motwani, the first Principal, both of whom devoted their lives to the task of setting up a school for Buddhist girls. There lies the beginning of this great institution.
Education in English medium
It heralded the beginning of Sri Lanka’s education in the English medium after the departure of Imperial Masters from then Ceylon. Sujatha owes its origin to the vision and philanthropy of the noble founder. His intellect was well exhibited in the name, school motto and the school song drawn from sacred Buddhist scripture.
School motto, “Pagna Naranang Rathanang” and the school song has a great significance, serenity and sanctity in the human mind. School song was composed by Ananda Samarakoon, a legend of music in Sri Lanka who is also the creator of the Sri Lankan National Anthem. A good foundation was laid and school marched forward with their effort and hard work.
The challenges faced by the duo were what made Sujatha unique to be carried forward by his son Lakshman Kuruppu who took over, an icon in the field of education. Being young and vibrant soon after his foreign education he took over Sujatha and opened the door to a new era. The demise of his father meant a lifetime commitment by him culminating in a wide awakening in education par excellence.
This time my attention is drawn to the fabulous book reflecting the remarkable progress of this esteemed institution. Thanks to Sujatha Vidyalaya it is my pride and joy. I was extremely proud and much privileged to be the first recipient of this great creation thanks to the Managing Director and his loyal team. I feel honoured and well rewarded for my enthusiasm, sincerity and loyalty.
I am glad that I did have the fortune to serve this esteemed institution and be a part of this great work. This masterpiece is the brainchild of the present Managing Director translated into action by his loyal team, who got courage and confidence to embark on this massive task.
First and foremost, I wish to record my personal admiration to Dr. Aravinda Guruge of Adelaide, for making me the first recipient. Let me thank the other deserving ones also here. My grateful thanks to Aditha Dissanayake for her creativity and the publishers for a job well done.
