Top Universities to take part in CFA Society competition

Teams from the University of Colombo, the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and two teams from the University of Kelaniya have qualified for the finals of CFA Institute Research Challenge Sri Lanka 2023/24, following an extensive grading process. The finals will be held on February 27 at the Colombo Stock Exchange

President of CFA Society Sri Lanka, Aruna Perera said that this year the highest number of teams will be participating in the annual educational initiative, which promotes best practices in equity research among the next generation of analysts through hands-on mentoring and intensive training in company analysis and presentation skills.

Each university team consisting of five students will present their analysis and buy/sell/hold recommendations on the subject company, hSenid Business Solutions PLC, to a panel of judges from the investment community. Their presentation is the culmination of months of research, rigorous training, interviews with the company management, and preparation, under the supervision of their faculty advisor and a dedicated industry mentor.

The winning team of the local finals will advance to the sub-regional competition and have a chance to progress to the regional and global competitions thereafter. This year, the CFA Institute Global Research Challenge competition will be held on May 13 in Warsaw, Poland.

The teams that participated represented public and private universities – University of Colombo, University of Jaffna, University of Kelaniya, University of Moratuwa, University of Peradeniya, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, University of Wayamba, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, NSBM Green University and Royal Institute of Colombo.

Chairperson of the Research Challenge committee of CFA Society Sri Lanka Eneeshya Perera said that this initiative not only promotes excellence in equity investment research but also equips students with essential skills and training on aspects such as financial analysis, environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations, and effective communication.

This year, the CFA Institute Research Challenge hosted by CFA Society Sri Lanka is sponsored by the Colombo Stock Exchange, as a Platinum sponsorreaffirming their dedication to empowering the next generation of analysts and investors.
