Havelocks take third place beating CH 28-11

Havelocks beat CH and FC by 28 points (3 tries, 2 conversions, 3 penalties) to 11 points (1 try, 2 penalties) in their Nippon Paint ‘A’ Division Inter-club League rugby second round fixture played at the Royal Sports Complex yesterday.

Havelocks led at half time by 10 points to 8 and the win made them finish third best in the eight team championship.

Havies opened scoring in the fifth minute through a penalty for a 3-0 lead, when their full back Samuel Maduwantha slotted in a 30 metre penalty.

In the 22nd minute of the game Havies increased their lead further when their fly half Sandesh Jayawickrema went over for a superb try. Maduwantha put over the conversion and Havies led 10-0.

CH scored an unconverted try through their number eight Janith Lakshara in the 29th minute to cut down the lead to 5-10. They further cut down the lead to 8-10 when fly half Rohitha Rajapaksa put over a 35 metre penalty in the 34th minute.

At half time Havies led 10 – 8.

CH grabbed the lead in the 49th minute when Rohitha Rajapaksa put over a 35 metre penalty to make it 11-10.

In the 51st minute Maduwantha fired across a 30 metre penalty for Havies to take the lead once again 13-11.

Havies prop forward turned number eight Janindu Fernando went over the line for a superb try off a five metre scrum in the 62nd minute and Maduwantha made the conversion to give Havies an unassailable lead by 20 points to 11.

Havelocks went further ahead in the 68th minute when replacement player Chathura Dilshan scored off a beautiful three-quarter move. Maduwantha put over the conversion and Havies led 25-11.

Maduwantha put over a 30 metre penalty in the dying moments of the game and Havies finished easy winners over their famed counterparts CH by 28 points to 11.
