The much awaited ‘English Activity Day’, conducted by Princess of Wales’ College, Moratuwa was held at the school auditorium with the participation of teachers, parents and well-wishers.
Mandapa Pandithage was the Chief Guest.
The event commenced with a colourful drill display presented by the junior school girls followed by the school’s western band. The lighting of the oil lamp was the first event while a group of girls sang the school anthem. Girls in Grade Five attended the ‘English Activity Day’ events.
The students displayed their inborn talents by conducting various items including an English spelling contest, announcing, reading English news similar to the news bulletin telecast on television, a musical chairs competition, a stage drama and singing and dancing events.
All events were organised by the school’s English teacher, Dhammika Owitigala and staff member Sithara Perera under the guidance of the Principal, Thilini Wijeweera.
The chief guest, Pandithage highlighted the importance of conducting the ‘English Day Activity’ events and said, such programs encourage children to improve their English language skills and also to display their talents from their young days.
He also made a motivational speech.
Principal, Thilini Wijeweera who commended the performance of the children said they should learn subjects not only by sitting, reading and listening in the class room but also through fun activities.
English teacher, Dhammika Owitigala said, English is a global language and she wanted to conduct the English Activity Day for the benefit of students with the sole intention of improving their English language and activity skills.
“During the training period, I spent much time with children not as a teacher but as a friend and a mother,” she said. She also said she was happy to see the children getting an opportunity to display their skills and inborn talents by dancing, singing and speaking on the stage.
