Bad boy of the Sri Lanka cricket team Kusal Mendis has reportedly been told by the United States embassy in Colombo to provide a legal declaration to show he has been cleared of a road fatality five years ago after they refused to grant him a visa for the T20 World Cup with the team having to play its first three matches in the USA.
Mendis is reported to have answered ‘No’ in the visa form in the section that referred to involvement in any criminal acts that had raised concerns by US embassy officials who were aware of his misconduct behind the wheel of his posh SUV that caused the death of an elderly cyclist.
Asked to explain the reason for his questionable declaration in the visa form, Mendis is said to have claimed he had been cleared of the charges of causing a road fatality for which he was arrested by police and produced in court.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) which employs Mendis is yet to clarify why Mendis was refused a visa.
Several Sri Lankan cricketers have been tainted on a list of reckless driving with some of them able to get away with just a reprimand totally in contrast to declarations by SLC that it will not tolerate indiscipline among players.
Last year Mendis who is the captain of the ODI team escaped punishment after smashing the glass door of rival club Bloomfield with his bat while playing for the Sinhalese Sports Club in a domestic match.
