St. Joseph’s College
St Joseph’s College secured a comfortable 47-9 win over Thurstan College in their Dialog Schools ‘A’ Division League Rugby Tournament match at the Air Force ground at Ratmalana yesterday.
The dominant team from Darley Road scored six goals and one try, totaling 47 points and in contrast Thurstan managed only three penalties.
The game started with a 35-meter penalty by Thurstan centre Lesandu Athukorale in the third minute giving his team an early 3-0 lead.
St Joseph’s responded quickly and in the eighth minute, prop forward Shehan Manuda scored a try with Beeshma Jayasekara easily converting making the scores 7-3.
In the 14th minute, Thurstan fullback Nethupul Lasanda landed a penalty, narrowing the gap to 7-6.
St Joseph’s extended their lead in the 26th minute with a try by second rower Hemish Gamage, followed by another successful kick by Beeshma Jayasekara. By halftime, the score was 12-6 in favour of St Joseph’s.
After the break, St Joseph’s continued their dominance and prop forward Shehan Manuda scored a try for centre Ivano White to add the extra points making the scores19-6.
Ten minutes later prop Induwara Rodrigo scored another try for White to convert 26-6.
In the 58th minute flanker Pramod Perera scored a bonus point try under the posts and White added the extra points, 33-6 after which Lasanda put over a third penalty for Thurstan.
In the 69th minute hooker Mindulka Perera scored off a rolling maul followed by second rower Janith Marasinghe touching down under the posts.
White converted both tries for the scores to read 47-9.
