As Sri Lankans, we all prefer to live in extended families rather than nuclear families because we can learn many new things from our grandparents. The elderly people in our society are more educated than us. There is a Chinese saying, “An elderly person at home is like a living golden treasure.”
For a person to earn respect, he or she should give respect to his or her elders and youngsters. There are many reasons why the elders in a society should be respected. The elders are the pillars of a strong society. They have faced many ups and downs in their lives. They have been with people of different attributes.
Moreover, the elders have served society well, and now they should have the freedom to live the rest of their lives peacefully. The experiences they had in their lives are valuable teachings for the younger generations. In addition, elders have contributed a lot to sectors such as health and education. We are facing the world, not only because of our parents but also because of our elders.
In the present society, we see children disrespecting their parents and students disrespecting their teachers.
Immediate action should be taken to check this because if it continues, it will become a habit for future generations, too.
