Star swimmer Methvan Fernando of St. Joseph’s College stamped his class in no uncertain terms as he hit gold by excelling at the annual five kilometre Open Sea Swim at Trincomalee last Saturday to become the undisputed champion for a second time in four months.
He finished the race with a timing of 1 hour, 16 minutes and 13 seconds (1:16:13) at the championship conducted by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union while the second place was won by RBD Niroshana of the Army who finished in a time of 1:19:09.
Akash Prabashwara also from St. Joseph’s College was placed third.
Methvan Fernando is no stranger to long distance swimming as he also conquered the highly demanding 85th Annual Mount Lavinia two-mile Open Sea Swim on March 16 showing his potential for the future as one of the prized products of his school.
That he won the Trincomalee Open Sea Swim almost three minutes ahead of the second placed Niroshana spoke volumes about his status as one of the country’s best in aquatic sports.
Fernando started the year by contesting the two-mile Open Sea Swim at Ambalangoda on February 18 and took third place.
