The Colombo Rowing Club is set to host the 83rd edition of the prestigious Madras-Colombo Regatta on August 3, starting at 1 p.m. at the Beira Lake in Colombo. This is the oldest sporting competition between India and Sri Lanka and is the longest-running continuous regatta, celebrating decades of sportsmanship and camaraderie.
The regatta will feature 12 thrilling events, including eight men’s and four women’s competitions. The coveted ‘Deepam Trophy’ will be awarded to the overall winners in the men’s category, while the ‘Adyar Trophy’ will go to the women’s champions. The highlight of the regatta will be the event for the ‘Boat Race Trophy,’ to be presented to the winners of the men’s senior fours event.
In 2023, the Colombo Rowing Club won significantly by taking the men’s overall category and securing the Deepam Trophy. They also triumphed in ‘The Boat Race Trophy’ with an impressive tally of 34-16. The Madras Boat Club, however, claimed victory in the women’s category. In 2023, the Regatta was hosted by the Madras Boat Club in Chennai.
This year promises exciting and closely contested events among the rowers as the Madras Boat Club and the Colombo Rowing Club participants showcase their rowing prowess. The event is expected to draw a large audience, including dignitaries, sports enthusiasts and club members.
