The Election Commissioner (EC) has banned the opening of the Hikkaduwa bypass road which was built to remove the traffic congestion caused by the passage of heavy vehicles through Hikkaduwa city.
This road was built according to a promise made by Minister of Transport, Highways and Mass Media, Dr. Bandula Gunawardena to the Hikkaduwa business community, and its purpose was to remove the traffic congestion caused by the traffic in Hikkaduwa (Galle Road) due to the passage of heavy vehicles through the southern tourist zone of Hikkaduwa city.
Although the opening of the road was scheduled to be done on Friday morning, the Election Commissioner has informed Minister Gunawardena in writing that he cannot give permission to open it.
