Lyceum International School, Nuwara Eliya held its first-ever ‘Salangai Abhishekam’ ceremony, a traditional offering often associated with classical dance forms such as Bharatha Naatyam, at the Shri Gayatri Amman Hindu Temple in Nuwara Eliya.
Second Secretary of the Assistant Indian High Commission, Kandy, S. Somaraj was the chief guest.
During the ceremony, pooja offerings were made, and students received blessings as their dance guru tied the Salangai (bells) on them, symbolising their formal initiation into classical dance. The students then performed their first dance in front of the Hindu deity, offering their gratitude.
Somaraj outlined the power of cultural events to unite people from different backgrounds, saying, “When we come together to celebrate our culture, we see that our differences are what make us special. In this uniqueness, we find unity.”
He also emphasised the importance of cultural programs in education, as they teach us about history, traditions, and values, fostering acceptance and understanding.
He highlighted the physical and mental benefits of classical dance, noting that it improves balance, coordination, flexibility, and strength, while also boosting focus, discipline, creativity, and self-confidence.
Principal of Lyceum Nuwara Eliya, Ms. Princy Rathnayake said the school provides a balanced education system by offering valuable opportunities beyond academics.
Managing Trustee of the Gayathri Peetam, Sathyavel Chandramohan and Administrative Officer of the Assistant High Commission of India, Kandy, Dinesh Kumar, the school’s management team, parents, and students were present.
